Evaluation and development of gas injection systems for wastewater treatment

The performance of gas injection systems for air or pure oxygen in aeration tanks largely determines the energy consumption and efficiency of entire wastewater treatment plants. The CLEWATEC Innovation Lab offers scientific expertise and access to a unique infrastructure for the optimization and development of gas injection systems. The service can consist of both rapid performance tests and long-term studies for further development at laboratory, pilot and real scale. The advanced measurement instruments and test facilities are available to perform analysis on the following aspects:

  • Substance transfer efficiency according to DWA-M 209 guideline

  • Gas bubble size and distribution

  • Mixing efficiency

  • Pollutant removal (NH3-N, NO3-N, BOD5, COD)

We are looking for partners interested in R&E services to further develop gas injection systems by investigating fluid dynamic, physicochemical and biological processes.

Details

The infrastructure within the flow laboratory of CLEWATEC and HZDR includes several test rigs as well as a biosafety level 2 certified wastewater laboratory for investigations with real activated sludge. Analyses based on e.g. videometry, flow microscopy or image processing algorithms are offered. Two DN 900 columns with a maximum filling height of 4 meters are installed in our wastewater laboratory and equipped with instruments for oxygen transfer and nitrification experiments. The two identical columns enable parallel experiments at similar depths as in real aeration tanks. The infrastructure of the flow laboratory is supplemented by the 14 cubic meter mobile aeration tanks, which can be used as a bypass on real wastewater treatment plants. Like the DN 900 columns, the two identical tanks are suitable for parallel performance tests with maximum comparability.
